Senator worried about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in May

The chair of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Bob Menendez, said on Tuesday that the date for withdrawing US forces from Afghanistan on May 1 may have to be reconsidered because the Taliban are not fulfilling their obligations under the 2020 peace deal.

"I am very concerned about the feasibility of the peace process in Afghanistan," he said in a call with reporters, adding that he believed that the Taliban "does not clearly abide" with all the pledges they have made.

The new administration of President Joe Biden wants to revive the stalled peace talks before May 1, when the time comes for the departure of the last 2,500 American soldiers from Afghanistan, according to an agreement reached on February 29, 2020 between the Taliban and the administration of former US President Donald Trump.
