A study concludes that the Corona virus does not infect the entire body in the same way



Coronavirus is primarily a respiratory infection, however, the virus has also been known to affect other parts of the body in ways that are not well understood, sometimes with long-term consequences, such as an irregular heartbeat, fatigue and "brain fog".


Researchers at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego are using organelles derived from stem cells - which are small balls of human cells that look and act like tiny organs in a laboratory dish - to study how the virus interacts with various organ systems and develop treatments to prevent infection.


The team published their findings in the journal Stem Cell Reports, confirming that like many organs, lung and brain cells that the team examines produce molecules that stimulate the entry of the Corona virus into the body.


The team developed a pseudovirus - a non-infectious version of the Coronavirus - and classified it with the green fluorescent protein, which helps researchers visualize the inner workings of cells, as it allowed them to determine the extent to which the virus's elevation protein binds to ACE2 receptors in the human lung and brain organism, and to evaluate the cell responses. The team was surprised to see the receptors. ACE2 is approximately 10 times greater in lung organelles, compared to brain organelle.


Along with differences in infection levels, the lung and brain aliquots also differed in their response to the virus, as corona-infected lung cells pump out molecules intended to summon help from the immune system - interferons, cytokines and chemokines.


On the other hand, the affected brain cells increased their production of other molecules that play a fundamental role in identifying pathogens and activating innate immunity.


The team said: “The way we see brain cells interacting with the virus may help explain some of the neurological effects reported by COVID-19 patients.” However, the organics that the team used in the laboratory are not exact copies of human organs. They lack blood vessels and immune cells, for example, but they provide an important tool to study diseases and test potential treatments, in addition to their work with the pseudovirus, the team validates their findings by applying live and infectious corona virus to lung and brain organelles in a laboratory.
